レシプロエンジンはピストンの上下運動をクランクシャフトへ伝え回転運動へと変換していきます。ロータリーエンジンとの違いを知るためにまず注目していただきたいのは、このエンジンは上下運動を回転運動に変換している点、そして吸気、排気をバルブの開閉にて行っている点が大きくロータリーエンジンとは異なります。
